February 2011 NaHaiWriMo Writing Prompts

Selected by Michael Dylan Welch, Sammamish, Washington

The inaugural National Haiku Writing Month began on 1 February 2011. Early on that first day, someone suggested that it might help if there were a daily prompt, so I offered the first prompt, and continued each day for the rest of the month. The prompt really helped to focus everyone who participated. No one had to write about the prompt, and everyone was free to share whatever haiku they felt like sharing, but it gave the community a real sense of anticipation and focus that has continued for all the months of the year since that first month. Hopefully these prompts will continue to be an inspiration for any kind of poetry writing.
