January 2013 NaHaiWriMo Writing Prompts

Selected by Violette Rose-Jones

1

Green things. The New Year is upon us, fresh and new, and that always makes me think of the colour green.

2

Ice. Yep ice, ice baby! The coolest of the cool.

3

Something that evokes the season for you. It’s summer here in Australia and night-scented jessamine does it for me. What does it for you?

4

Smoke/fog. Smoke gets in your eyes but I haven’t got the foggiest what you guys will make of this one.

5

Love. Love, love me do. Love is definitely in the air for today.

6

Your favourite colour. I like violet myself.

7

Shoes. These boots are meant for writing about!

8

Waves or flames. I am drowning not waving in a burning ring of fire. Go with the seasonal spirit on this one.

9

Soil. You gotta get dirt on your hands, guys!

10

Wind. The haiku, my friends, are blowing in the wind.

11

Intensity/extremes/passion. This prompt was originally going to be passion but love raised some serious protests, so I have made it more open.

12

Religion. This should produce haiku of Amazing Grace.

13

Your favourite food. Surely this one can’t be offensive.

14

Concrete/bricks/ general building supplies. I hope the concrete and the clay beneath my feet won’t crumble on this one.

15

Storms. Hopefully this will be writers on the storm.

16

Fresh water. Rivers, streams, a puddle. Throw some water in those haiku.

17

Stone. Poets in glasshouses do write about stones.

18

Summer/the absence of summer/summer activities. Summer time (in Australia) and the haiku should come easy.

19

Interconnectedness. I know this is a tricky one but everything in nature depends on or supports something else or you could go totally another direction with it. I can’t wait to see what you lot come up with. Some of you have delightfully devious minds.

20

Your favourite place.

21

Statues/mannequins/dolls. Hell, 3D hologram Tupac.

22

Females. Doe, a deer, a female deer, or human. Hell, thank heavens for little girls!

23

Home. Be it ever so humble, it is still worth a few good haiku.

24

Ghosts/the ephemeral/the almost intangible.

25

Male. Let’s try and remember that these kind of prompts are OPEN.

26

Wisdom/intelligence/the getting or source of knowledge. For Aussies, I am going to give an alternate prompt, Australia Day, which is of course, today.

27

Favourite flower or plant.

28

Roads/paths/lanes.

29

Rain. We have torrential stuff going on here, so this is appropriate, though coincidentally so.

30

Animals. Humans are animals too.

31

Free choice or might I suggest revisiting your favourite prompt or the one you hated.
